But dreams can shift to nightmares in an instant. “I was taking one turn after another when suddenly I saw a rock lying right in my lane,” recalls Regimantas. The rock had rolled down from the mountain and was sitting squarely in the middle of the road. He had only a few seconds to decide—swerve left, brake hard, or take the right side. He chose the latter, but just as he did, a car appeared ahead in the turn. Panic gripped him as time seemed to freeze at that moment.
Frozen with fear, Regimantas couldn’t react quickly enough. The collision grazed the car’s left fender, wheel, and doors, and he was thrown to the opposite side of the road. “I ended up on the ground and rolled to the other side of the road,” he remembers. Silence followed—broken only by his heavy, uneven breathing and the throbbing pain coursing through his left side of the body.
