Crash Tested: A Winter Slide, a Wooden Stake, and the Gear That Held Strong

January 28, 2026

Some motorcycle accidents happen in an instant, while others become painful lessons about the importance of focus, preparation, and high-quality gear. Samantha’s February ride through Holbrook, New York, became a serious reminder that any trip can turn out to be a little dangerous and that armoured protection is worth every additional cent.

An Unexpected Slide

On January 29, Samantha was riding her Yamaha R3 with her husband and a friend. They were on a rural highway with a speed limit of 88 km/h (55 mph). While trying to maintain a moderate pace, Samantha felt the pressure to keep up. As they approached a left turn, the traffic light turned yellow. Trying to make it through, Samantha accelerated but fixated her gaze on a wooden stake sticking out of the snowy curb. Her motorcycle slid onto the icy shoulder, lost traction, and threw her into a low-side slide back onto the road.

Protected for Impact

Although the crash looked serious, Samantha walked away completely unharmed — thanks to her properly chosen motorcycle gear. Her outer heated jacket tore and lifted, but the armored Pando Moto SHELL UH 03 base layer stayed in place thanks to integrated thumb loops. The elbow area took the worst of the impact – with some seam wear – but her skin underneath remained completely protected.Paired with armored leather pants from Dainese, which also absorbed significant force, her motorcycle gear for women was the difference between a painful, possibly life-changing injury and a safe return home.

An Obvious Choice

Samantha’s advice to other motorcycle riders is clear:

“Wearing gear is a no-brainer. The worst pain people describe is when EMS has to scrape clean road rash to avoid infection. The spill I took would’ve been 10 times worse without abrasion-resistant armored protective gear.”

She also noted that her outer heated jacket tore within two seconds – proving that regular clothing can’t compete with asphalt.

The Takeaway

Samantha’s story is yet another real-life example of how the right motorcycle gear can save skin – and possibly a life. Her Pando Moto base layer performed exactly as intended: it protected her body, stayed in place, and didn’t restrict movement.

The SHELL UH 03 base layer she wore is designed for bikers who want top-level protection without sacrificing comfort. Made from abrasion-resistant BALISTEX® material that is 15 times stronger than steel and equipped with CE-approved armour, it’s built to withstand serious incidents.

Her message to fellow motorcyclists? Dress for the slide, not the ride. Always.
